I can’t reach some websites when connected to NordVPN

NordVPN empowers users with enhanced online privacy and security, but occasionally, users might find that certain normally accessible websites become unavailable when a VPN is active. This phenomenon, while perplexing, arises from specific interactions between VPN technology and website security protocols.

If you cannot access some websites or suspect that NordVPN is blocking them, follow these instructions:

  1. Do a NordVPN DNS leak test while connected to our servers. If you are connected to one of our servers but your status says unprotected, proceed to the following steps to ensure your connection is secure. Stop any leaks from your connection by following these tutorials:

  2. Next, clear your browser cache
  3. Try using another browser.
  4. Connect to a different server by reconnecting to the same location or a different country.
  5. Change your DNS addresses to NordVPN's directly in the NordVPN application:

    • MacOS
        1. Open the NordVPN application and click on the shield icon in the top left corner of the app.
        2. In the Overview section, make sure that DNS filtering is disabled.
        3. Then, go to settings by clicking the gear icon in the bottom-left corner of the application window.
        4. Click on the DNS tab.
        5. In the DNS section, press the add new DNS button and input the 103.86.96.100 address. Then, press the button again and enter the 103.86.99.100 address.
        6. Turn the feature on and reconnect to the VPN.
    • Windows
        1. Open the NordVPN application.
        2. Go to settings by clicking the gear icon in the bottom-left corner of the application window.
        3. Go to the connection tab.
        4. Turn on the custom DNS feature.
        5. Click on the drop-down arrow and input the following DNS addresses: 103.86.98.100 and 103.86.99.100
        6. Reconnect to NordVPN.
    • iOS
        1. Open the NordVPN application and tap the Threat Protection (shield icon) tab to disable the feature if it is enabled.
        2. Open the Profile tab located in the bottom-right corner.
        3. Head to the settings menu and select the protocol button.
        4. In the DNS section, tap enter custom DNS address button and enter this address: 103.86.96.100
        5. Reconnect to the VPN to confirm the change.
    • Linux
        1. Enter this command in the terminal: nordvpn set DNS 1.1.1.1 1.0.0.1
    • AndroidTV/Firestick
        1. Open the NordVPN application and click the settings button on the left menu.
        2. Then, scroll down and select the app settings.
        3. Press the DNS field and select the custom button in the right menu.
        4. In the new screen, enter the 103.86.96.100 DNS address.
        5. Reconnect to the VPN to confirm the change.

  6. Disable other browser extensions, such as ad-blockers, as they may interfere with our service.
