NordVPN is compatible with Apple and features a native application that we recommend as the best way to connect to NordVPN servers. Even though we have two application versions, they both provide online security and features such as Double VPN, Onion over VPN servers, and automated Kill Switch.
Instructions on how to install NordVPN on macOS
NordVPN on macOS has two different versions. The following articles contain installation instructions for both of them:
What is the difference between the two versions?
This version of the NordVPN application can be installed directly from the Apple App Store on macOS devices with firmware no older than 10.12. The main benefit of using the IKEv2 app is that it offers the NordLynx protocol. It also features the Kill-Switch, which cuts internet access if the VPN connection suddenly disconnects. This prevents your connection from any vulnerabilities if it drops without terminating app processes.
Although OpenVPN lacks NordLynx, it allows you to access certain additional preferences, such as custom DNS servers. Additionally, when activated, the Kill-Switch terminates separate apps, instead of your entire internet connection. This version of the app can be sideloaded from our website, and it can run on earlier versions of macOS (no older than 10.10).
How to use NordVPN on macOS
Connecting to NordVPN using the macOS app is easy:
- Open the NordVPN macOS app;
- If required, complete the login process;
- Click on "Quick connect" or select a specific country from the map.
Now you're connected to the internet securely!
Tip: Don't forget to use a strong password on your NordVPN account, as it will help you to avoid credential stuffing attacks and will keep your account safe.
As generating and remembering strong and secure passwords is not an easy task, we recommend downloading a free password manager — NordPass. It generates secure passwords for you and stores them safely, letting you avoid time-wasting password resets in the future.
NordPass offers native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, so you can reach your passwords when and where needed, even offline.
