Introduction
This article will show you how to enable and configure the NordVPN auto-connect feature on the NordVPN app.
Requirements
Ensure you have installed the NordVPN app and turned off any additional VPN applications.
Here’s what to do
NOTE: The NordVPN tvOS app cannot configure “Auto-connect” functionality.
On Windows
- Open the NordVPN app.
- Click the gear icon in the lower-left corner to enter the “Settings” menu.
- Click “Connection and security.”
- Open the drop-down menu next to “Auto-connect.”
- Select "On all networks" to have the VPN connect automatically on any network. Alternatively, choose "On Wi-Fi networks", "On Ethernet", or "On mobile networks" to connect automatically only on those specific connection types.
- By default, the app will connect to the recommended country. To change this, click the arrow below, select "Custom", and then choose a country from the drop-down menu.
On macOS
- Open the NordVPN app.
- Click the gear icon in the lower-left corner to enter the “Settings” menu.
- Click "Auto-connect."
- Enable the toggle for “Auto-connect.”
- By default, you’ll be connected to the recommended country. You can change it by clicking the “Connect to” drop-down menu and selecting the country you want to be connected to.
On Android
- Open the NordVPN app.
- Tap the profile icon at the bottom-right corner.
- Scroll down and tap “Settings.”
- Tap "Auto-connect."
- Select "All networks" to have the VPN connect automatically on any network. Alternatively, choose "On Wi-Fi" or "On mobile networks" to auto-connect only on those specific connection types.
- By default, you will be connected to the fastest available server. You can change it by tapping “Fastest server” and choosing which country you want to be connected to.
On iOS
- Open the NordVPN app.
- Tap on the profile icon at the bottom-right corner.
- Tap "Settings."
- Tap "Auto-connect."
- Select "Always" to automatically connect to a VPN on all networks, or select "On Wi-Fi networks" to connect only when using Wi-Fi.
- By default, you will be connected to the fastest available server. You can change it by tapping “Fastest server” and selecting the country you want to be connected to.
On Linux
- Enter this commands into your terminal:
nordvpn set autoconnect on
- By default, you will be connected to the fastest available server. To set a specific country on the NordVPN Linux CLI app, use this command:
nordvpn set autoconnect on <country_code>
For example, to automatically connect to France, use this command:nordvpn set autoconnect on fr
On a NordVPN browser extension
- Click the jigsaw piece icon at the upper-right corner of your browser to access the “Extensions” tab.
- Click the NordVPN icon to open the NordVPN extension.
- Click the cogwheel icon at the bottom-right to open the "Settings" menu.
- Click “Connection and security.”
- Enable the toggle for “Auto-connect.”
- By default, you will be connected to the fastest available server. You can change it by tapping “Quick connect (fastest server)” and selecting the country you want to be connected to.
On Android TV
- Open the NordVPN app.
- Select the gear icon in the lower-left corner to enter the “Settings” menu.
- Select "Auto-connect."
- Enable the toggle for “Auto-connect.”
- By default, you will be connected to the fastest available server. You can change it by tapping “Fastest server” and selecting the country you want to be connected to.
Additional steps
- You can prevent the NordVPN from auto-connecting on specific networks, such as your home or office Wi-Fi, by adding them to a "Trusted networks" list. Refer to our guide on how to set up trusted networks on different devices.
