Enabling Threat Protection Pro™ on older macOS versions

Read the guide below to enable and start using Threat Protection Pro™ on older macOS versions such as Ventura, Sonoma, Big Sur, or Monterey. If you are using a newer macOS version, check out enabling Threat Protection on macOS instead.

Threat Protection Pro™ is an additional security feature available only with selected NordVPN plans. Learn more about what NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™ is and how it works.

 

To be able to enable Threat Protection Pro™, you need to see a shield icon within the app. If you can't find Threat Protection Pro™, you are probably using the App Store version. In that case, delete the application from your macOS device and download NordVPN’s macOS version from our website.

 

If the shield icon is present, follow one of the sections below:

 

Setting up Threat Protection Pro™ on macOS Ventura & Sonoma

When using a native NordVPN application, you can set up Threat Protection Pro™ on macOS Ventura & Sonoma in a few steps:

  1. Open the NordVPN application and click on the shield icon in the left bar.



  2. Click set up in the overview tab.



  3. You’ll see a window. Click on set up Threat Protection Pro™.



    You'll then have to enter System settings > Privacy & security.



  4. Once you are in System Settings, head to Privacy & Security and click Allow under System software from application “NordVPN” was blocked from loading:



  5. Confirm this action by typing in your computer’s password or via Touch ID and clicking update settings.



  6. Once you have successfully allowed NordVPN to load, go back to the NordVPN app and press continue.



  7. Next up, enable browser protection by pressing Add proxy configurations. In the pop-up that appears, press Allow.



    If you have any web browsers running, you will be asked to reboot them in order to enable the Ad & tracker blocker and advanced browsing protection.



  8. Once you've enabled the browsing protection, press continue.



  9. Lastly, enable the anti-malware protection by going to System settings > Privacy & security > Full disk access and toggling the NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™ to the ON position.



    You've successfully set up NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™ on your macOS Ventura or Sonoma device.

 

Setting up Threat Protection Pro™ on macOS Big Sur & Monterey

When using a native NordVPN application, you can set up Threat Protection Pro™ on macOS Big Sur & Monterey in a few steps:

  1. Open the NordVPN application and click on the shield icon in the left bar.



  2. Click set up in the overview tab.



  3. You’ll see a window. Click on set up Threat Protection Pro™.



    You'll then have to enter System settings > Privacy & security and allow the NordVPN application to load:



  4. Once you have successfully allowed NordVPN to load, go back to the NordVPN app and press Continue.



  5. Next up, press Allow in the pop-up when enabling browser protection.



    If you have any web browsers running, you will be asked to reboot them in order to enable the Ad & tracker blocker and advanced browsing protection.



  6. Once you've enabled the browsing protection, press Continue.



  7. Lastly, enable the anti-malware protection by going to System preferences > Security & privacy > Privacy and giving NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™ full disk access. After you're done, make sure to click the lock icon at the bottom.



    You've successfully set up NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™ on your macOS Monterey or Big Sur device.

To turn on the cloud-based threat scanner for malware after you have finished the setup wizard, go to the NordVPN app > Threat Protection Pro™ > Settings and click the toggle next to Cloud-based threat detection.



You’ve successfully enabled the cloud-based deep threat scanning for malware detection.
