Enabling Threat Protection Pro™ on macOS

Read the guide below to enable and start using Threat Protection Pro™ on the latest macOS versions. If you are using an older version of macOS, check out enabling Threat Protection Pro™ on older macOS versions.

This feature automatically blocks ads, trackers, and malicious URLs and is only available with selected NordVPN plans. Learn more about what is NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™.

To be able to enable Threat Protection Pro™, you need to see a shield icon within the app. If you can't find Threat Protection Pro™, you are probably using the App Store version. In that case, delete the application from your macOS device and download NordVPN’s macOS version from our website.

 

Setting up Threat Protection Pro™ on macOS

To set up Threat Protection Pro™ on macOS, follow the steps bellow:

  1. Open the NordVPN application and click on the shield icon in the left bar.



  2. Click Set up in the Overview tab.



  3. You’ll see a window. Click on Set up Threat Protection Pro™. 



    Please note that this guide displays how to set up Threat Protection Pro™ on macOS Sequoia. If you're using an older macOS version, check out how to set up Threat Protection Pro™ on older macOS versions.


    You'll then have to enter System settings > General > Login items & extensions > Endpoint security extensions and turn on the toggle the slider next to NordVPN to the ON position.



  4. Confirm this action by typing in your computer’s password or via Touch ID and clicking Update Settings.



  5. Once you have successfully allowed the NordVPN Threat Protection Pro extension™ to load, press Continue in the NordVPN app.



  6. Next up, enable browser protection by pressing Add proxy configurations. In the pop-up that appears, press Allow.



    You will be asked to reboot any web browsers that are running in order to enable the Ad & tracker blocker and advanced browsing protection.



  7. Once you've enabled the browsing protection, press Continue.



  8. Lastly, enable the anti-malware protection by going to System settings > Privacy & security > Full disk access and toggling the NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™ to the ON position.



    We also recommend enabling cloud-based deep threat scanner to protect your devices from malware.



    To do so, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and click on the toggle icon next to NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™.



    If you’re using macOS Monterey version or older — go to Security & Privacy, select Full Disk Access in the left panel, and click on the lock icon at the bottom.



  9. Confirm this action by typing in your computer’s password or via Touch ID and clicking update settings.



    You've successfully set up NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™.

  10. To pause or disable Threat Protection Pro™, click the pause button and select the option you prefer.

 

Enabling cloud-based threat scanning for malware in files

If you wish to enable the cloud-based deep threat scanner to protect your devices from malware after the initial setup wizard is over, follow these steps:
Go to the NordVPN app > Threat Protection Pro™ > Settings and click the toggle next to Cloud-based threat detection.



You’ve successfully enabled the cloud-based deep threat scanning for malware detection.
