How to resolve Threat Protection Pro™ issues on macOS?

To resolve issues with Threat Protection Pro™, it is important to first understand this NordVPN feature and how it works. This feature enhances your security by automatically blocking ads, trackers, and malicious URLs. Threat Protection Pro™ is only available with selected NordVPN plans.

Most of the issues you may get are caused by not providing the NordVPN app with the permissions needed. The NordVPN app will notify you if your browsing protection or anti-malware protection is off. You may also get the Threat Protection Pro failed to start error. 

 

How to resolve the Threat Protection Pro™ browser protection is off pop-up?

The NordVPN app will notify you in case the browsing protection is off. In order to resolve it, you need to provide the NordVPN app with the permissions needed:

  1. On the pop-up, click on restore protection.

  2. Next, click the turn on button:

How to resolve the Threat Protection Pro™ anti-malware protection is off pop-up?

The NordVPN app will also notify you in case the anti-malware protection is off. In order to resolve it, you need to provide the NordVPN app with the permissions needed:

  1. On the pop-up, click restore protection option:

  2. You will also see the following notification in the overview window – click set up:

  3. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and click on the toggle icon next to NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™.

    To do so, go to system settings > privacy & security > full disk access and click on the toggle icon next to NordVPN Threat Protection Pro™.

 

How to resolve the Threat Protection Pro™ failed to start error?

Another error you may be notified about is when Threat Protection Pro™ is unable to start its internal processes.

To resolve this error, try the following:

  1. Press Try again – this will reboot the internal Threat Protection Pro™ processes and should resolve the issues you are facing in most scenarios.
  2. Log out and Log back into your account, and try launching Threat Protection Pro™ again.
  3. Try going to System Settings > General > Login items & extensions > Endpoint security extensions > Click (...) button > Locate the Threat Protection Pro™ extension and enable it manually.

Try reinstalling the NordVPN app on your macOS device. For reference, see our article on installing the NordVPN application on macOS.

If you are using macOS Sequoia and above, we recommend a full clean up of Threat Protection Pro™ before reinstalling:

  1. Go to System Settings > General > Login items & extensions > Endpoint security extensions > Click (...) button > Delete NordVPN extension.
  2. Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access > Delete Threat Protection.
  3. Delete the NordVPN app. For reference, you can check out how to uninstall NordVPN software.
  4. Open terminal and run:
    defaults delete com.nordvpn.macos
  5. Restart your macOS device, open terminal again, and run the following: 
    systemextensionsctl list
  6. Reinstall the NordVPN application.
  7. It should show 0 – if it does, it means that all NordVPN software has been removed from your macOS device.
