NordVPN macOS application versions

Introduction

Learn the differences between the NordVPN App Store and website versions, and then follow our guide to set up and use the application on your macOS device.

Before you start

Your device must be running macOS 12 (Monterey) or a later version.
Choose which version of the app to install based on the features you need:
- The version from the NordVPN website offers Threat Protection Pro™, a customizable Kill Switch for specific apps, and custom DNS settings.
- The version from the App Store offers a simpler installation a Kill Switch that blocks all internet access if the VPN connection drops.
- Both versions provide online security and include features like Double VPN, Meshnet, Onion Over VPN servers, and the NordLynx connection protocol.

Explore the "Settings" menu by clicking the gear icon in the bottom-left corner of the app:
- In the "General" settings, set the app to launch on startup, choose your VPN protocol, enable post-quantum encryption, and turn on Invisible on a local network.
- Use the auto-connect settings to have the app automatically connect when you join an untrusted network.
- Enable the Kill Switch to prevent unprotected internet access if the VPN connection drops.
- Customize your app appearance.
- Check your account details, subscription status, and security settings.
