How to set up NordVPN on the latest Asus WRT firmware

In 2022 Asus introduced a new version of Asus WRT which is available for the following routers: ASUS ZenWiFi XT9, ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000, RT-AX88U, RT-AX86U, RT-AX86S, RT-AXE7800. If you need a guide on setting up a VPN connection with older Asus WRT firmware, follow the guide here.

Setting up an OpenVPN connection:

  1. First, you must log in to your Asus router's control panel. You can do that by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of your browser. A window will pop up, asking you to enter your username and password. Unless you have changed your credentials, the default username is admin, and the default password is admin (or no password).

  2. Once you have logged in to the Control Panel, select VPN in the left sidebar menu and then click on the VPN Fusion tab at the top of the page.

  3. Click on the Add profile or the '+' sign button.

  4. In the pop-up window, select the OpenVPN tab and fill in the fields:

Connection name: you can give the connection any name you like
    Username: your NordVPN service username
    Password: your NordVPN service password

You can find your NordVPN service credentials (service username and service password) in the Nord Account dashboard. Copy the credentials by clicking on the Copy buttons next to the credentials.

Once you have downloaded the files, go back to the control panel of your router and click Import .ovpn file in the pop-up window.

  6. After filling in the fields and uploading the .ovpn configuration file, configure which devices you wish to route through the VPN tunnel. You can do so by pressing the "edit pen" in the Device section:
