Problem
You cannot connect to a NordVPN server, and you see a warning that you have initiated too many connections or reached the device limit. The message asks you to wait 10 minutes before trying again or to disconnect a device if you are already connected to the maximum allowed number.
Common symptoms
- You are unable to connect to NordVPN, and "Quick Connect" or selecting a country does not establish a connection.
- The app shows "Not connected" with an IP of 00.000.000.0.
- A yellow warning appears stating: "You initiated too many connections or reached the device limit:
- Wait 10 minutes before the next connection. If you're connected on 10 devices, first disconnect one of them and wait 10 minutes."
- The error appears even though your internet works normally without the VPN.
Troubleshooting
NOTE: Check if the issue is resolved after each step.
- Double-check the following:
- Check if you have the latest NordVPN app by checking the settings for an "Update" button.
- Count how many devices are currently connected to NordVPN under your account.
- Review all the devices where you use NordVPN (computers, phones, tablets, routers).
- If you are connected on the maximum number of devices (10), disconnect NordVPN on at least one of them.
- Wait 10 minutes before trying to connect again.
- This waiting period is expected behavior that protects NordVPN services from being overloaded.
- Avoid repeatedly tapping "Quick Connect" during this time, as additional attempts can extend the wait.
- After 10 minutes have passed, open the app and try connecting once.
- Disconnect unused devices and retry.
- On any device you are not actively using, open NordVPN and disconnect from the VPN.
- If you no longer use NordVPN on a particular device, sign out there.
- Return to the device you want to use, wait the full 10 minutes if you have not already, then try connecting again.
- Restart the NordVPN app and your device, then reconnect.
- Close NordVPN completely.
- Restart your device.
- Open NordVPN and attempt a single connection using "Quick Connect".
- Reinstall NordVPN:
- Uninstall NordVPN.
- Download and install NordVPN.
- Open the app, sign in if prompted, and try connecting again.
- Sign out and sign back in to refresh your account session.
- Open the NordVPN app and sign out of your account.
- Wait a few moments, then sign back in.
- Try connecting once after signing in.
- If the error continues after waiting and reducing your connected devices, contact NordVPN support.
- Provide your platform, app version, and the exact error message.
- Let us know how many devices you have connected and how many attempts you made.
- This helps us check whether the issue is related to your account sessions or something we need to resolve on our side.
Additional tips
- Keep track of how many devices use NordVPN at the same time to stay within your account's simultaneous connection limit.
- Sign out of NordVPN on devices you no longer use to free up available connection slots.
- Avoid pressing "Connect" multiple times in quick succession, as repeated attempts can trigger the 10-minute waiting period.
- Keep the NordVPN app updated to reduce connection and session-related issues.
- If the problem keeps happening despite staying within your device limit and waiting the full 10 minutes, reach out to us so we can investigate further.
