I can’t connect from China on Android TV

Introduction

The NordVPN Android TV app is fully blocked in China. This article tells you how to manually set up an IKEv2/IPsec connection to use NordVPN on your Android TV device.

Before you start

  • Make sure you can log in to your Nord Account.
  • Make sure you can access your email account.
    NOTE: If you have a Fire TV device with VEGA OS, you will not be able to use it to set up a manual IKEv2/IPSec manual connection method this way.

Here’s what to do

  1. Enable the option to install apps from unknown sources:
     
    1. Open the “Settings” app (on Fire TV, navigate to the home screen first, then open the “Settings” app).
    2. Select “Device.”
    3. Select “Developer options.”
    4. Select “Apps from unknown sources” and press the center button.
    5. Select “Turn on” when you see the warning screen.
       
  2. Open a browser on your Android TV. On Fire TV, open the Downloader app instead:
     
    1. Navigate to the home page.
    2. Open the “Search” tool on the far left.
    3. Enter “Downloader.”
       
  3. Enter the following URL to download the NordVPN IKEv2 certificate:

    https://downloads.nordcdn.com/certificates/root.der 
     
  4. Enter the following URL to download and install the strongSwan VPN client:

    https://download.strongswan.org/Android/strongSwan-2.3.3.apk 
     
  5. Open the “strongSwan-2.3.3.apk” file and complete the installation process.
  6. Open the strongSwan application.
  7. Select on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the app and select “CA certificates” from the drop-down menu.
  8. Select the three-dot icon again and select “Import certificate.”
  9. Select the “root.der” file you downloaded in Step 3 and choose “Select.”
  10. After you select the CA file, press the “Import certificate” button.
  11. Press the left-pointing arrow to go back to the main screen of the strongSwan app.
  12. Select “Add VPN profile.”
  13. Select “Show advanced settings” under the profile name.
  14. Enter an IP address (such as 23.92.26.69) into the “Server” field and a corresponding hostname (us5783.nordvpn.com for 23.92.26.69) into the “Server identity” field, chosen from the following list:
     
    1. 23.92.26.69 - us5783.nordvpn.com
    2. 66.175.219.21 - us5783.nordvpn.com
    3. 172.104.110.252 - jp558.nordvpn.com
    4. 139.162.99.117 - jp560.nordvpn.com
    5. 50.116.9.72 - us5783.nordvpn.com
    6. 45.56.89.149 - us5783.nordvpn.com
       
  15. Fill in the authentication fields as follows:
     
    1. Open a browser on your Android TV device.
    2. Log in to your Nord Account.
    3. Click “NordVPN” on the left side of the browser.
    4. Click “Set up NordVPN manually.” 
    5. Click "Service credentials."
    6. Click "Verify email." 
    7. You will receive a verification code in your registered email. Type the code in.
    8. Use the “Copy” button to copy your username and paste it into the “Username” field.
    9. Use the “Copy” button to copy your password and paste it into the “Password” field.
       
  16. Select “Save.”
  17. Select the profile you have just created to connect.
  18. Press “Ok” when asked for permission to use the VPN connection.
    NOTE: Different devices may display slightly different warning messages.

Additional tips

  • Restart your device.
  • Try a different network.
  • Turn off any additional VPN services.
