Connecting to NordVPN (IKEv2/IPSec) on Android

Introduction

This article tells you how to manually set up an IKEv2/IPsec connection to use NordVPN on your Android device.

Before you start

  • Make sure you can log in to your Nord Account.
  • Make sure you can access your email account.

Here’s what to do

  1. Download the NordVPN IKEv2 certificate.
  1. Download and install the strongSwan VPN Client from the Play Store or directly from our website.
  2. Open the strongSwan app.
  3. Tap the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of the app and select “CA certificates” from the drop-down menu.
  4. Tap the three-dot icon again and select “Import certificate.”
  5. Tap the NordVPN IKEv2 certificate (the “root.der” file you downloaded in Step 1) and tap “Select.”
  6. Select the CA file and tap “Import Certificate.”
  7. Tap the left-pointing arrow to return to the strongSwan app's main screen.
  8. Tap “Add VPN profile.”
  9. Tap “Show advanced settings” under the profile name.
  10. Get your server hostname.
     
    1. Log in to your Nord Account, and tap NordVPN.
    2. Scroll down to Advanced Settings and click Set up NordVPN manually.
    3. Select the Server recommendation tab.
    4. Next to Available protocols, select IKEv2/IPSec.
    5. Copy the server hostname and paste it in the "Server" field of your strongSwan client.
       
  11. Fill in the authentication fields as follows:
     
    1. Open a browser on your Android device.
    2. Log in to your Nord Account.
    3. Tap “NordVPN” on the left side of the browser.
    4. Tap “Set up NordVPN manually.” 
    5. Tap "Service credentials."
    6. Tap "Verify email." 
    7. You will receive a verification code in your registered email. Type the code in.
    8. Use the “Copy” button to copy your username and paste it into the “Username” field.
    9. Use the “Copy” button to copy your password and paste it into the “Password” field.
       
  12. Tap “Save.”
  13. Tap the profile you have just created to connect.
  14. Tap “Ok” when asked for permission to use the VPN connection.
    NOTE: Different devices may display slightly different warning messages.

Additional tips

  • Restart your device.
  • Try a different network.
  • Turn off any additional VPN services.
