How to disconnect from NordVPN servers

Introduction

In this article, you'll learn about how to disconnect from NordVPN servers on all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux.

Before you start

Please be aware that once you disconnect from the VPN, your internet traffic will no longer be encrypted or protected by NordVPN.

Here's what to do

On Windows 10 and 11

  1. Open the NordVPN application.
  2. On the main screen, click the "Pause" button.
  3. A menu will appear with two main options:
    • Select one of the time durations to temporarily pause the VPN. The VPN connection will automatically resume once the selected time has passed.
    • Select the "Disconnect" option to disconnect completely. This will end your VPN session, and you will need to reconnect manually to secure your traffic again.

On Windows 7 and 8.1

  1. Open the NordVPN application.
  2. Click "Disconnect" at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Confirm by clicking "Disconnect" again in the drop-down menu.
NOTE: If Auto-connect is on, you will see a "Manage" button instead. Click it and select "Disconnect."

On Linux

  1. Open the terminal using keyboard shortcuts, press Ctrl + Alt + T.
  2. Enter the following command:
    nordvpn disconnect
    or
    nordvpn d

Additional tips

  • Remember to reconnect whenever you need privacy and security online to ensure your internet traffic is encrypted.
  • If you have the auto-connect feature enabled, a VPN connection will automatically be established as soon as you connect to any network (like Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or mobile). This means that even if you disconnect the VPN completely, it may reconnect on its own when you join a network.
