Installing and using NordVPN on Android TV or Nvidia Shield

NordVPN works on Nvidia Shield, Fire TV, and any Android TV-based device. This guide will help you install the NordVPN app on your TV.

How to set up a VPN on Nvidia Shield and Android TV

NOTE: Check out our guide to learn how to set up NordVPN on Amazon Fire devices if you have one.

  1. Download the NordVPN app for Android TV from our website and install it. You can also find NordVPN on the Google Play Store.
  2. Once the application has finished installing, open the NordVPN app. You will see the application's main menu. Select Log in to use your NordVPN account or Sign up to create a new one.
  3. After clicking Log in or Sign up to NordVPN on your TV with your account. Like in the screenshot below, you will see a QR code you will need to scan or a number for remote validation on your phone, laptop, or PC:

  4. The Android operating system may show a few warning messages. These are default Android warning messages for VPN connections — it is safe to continue. Sometimes, you may be required to mark a checkbox in the pop-up window.

The NordVPN app is easy to use. This section will explore how to connect to NordVPN servers on your Nvidia Shield or Android TV and go through the app’s settings.

  1. Press the Quick Connect button on the main screen to let our innovative algorithm automatically pick the best server for your needs:

  2. You can scroll down to the Countries section. From here, you can see your previous connections, if you have any, the popular locations, and choose to connect to countries that start from A to Z.

  3. In the Specialty servers section, you will find P2P, Obfuscated, Dedicated IP, Double VPN, and Onion Over VPN servers.

Meshnet

Meshnet is a new NordVPN feature that allows you to create a secure, private network for many devices located anywhere in the world, access them remotely, and send all your online traffic through another device.

Settings (Connection and Security)

You can access the Settings by tapping on the left side and scrolling until the Cogwheel.

You will then be able to see all the configuration options in the NordVPN application:

From this menu, you can check your subscription status, set up auto-connect, turn Threat Protection on/off, switch VPN protocols, enable local network discovery, and set up a custom DNS.

Auto-Connect

The auto-connect feature lets you select your preferred country or server type, to which the app will automatically connect.

The server types can range from all the specialty servers to your recent connections.

Moreover, you can configure the Auto-connect feature to be enabled only for all networks, networks you connect via Wi-Fi, or networks you connect via Ethernet to the internet.

Split-Tunneling

Split tunneling allows you to exclude applications from the VPN connection. In other words, the apps you select to add to the split tunneling feature will enable them to stay unaffected by NordVPN.

Protocol

Switch between Nordlynx, NordWhisper, OpenVPN TCP, and OpenVPN UDP connection protocols. We have a detailed guide on which VPN protocol you should choose.

DNS server

The DNS server feature lets you specify a custom DNS server for the NordVPN application to use when connected. This will override the NordVPN DNS servers, which can cause issues when using streaming services.

Local network discovery

If this feature is disabled, your device will be invisible to the Local Network, which is helpful for extra security. However, if you struggle to reach your TV or any printers, we recommend turning this setting on.

Post-Quantum encryption

The Post-Quantum Encryption feature additionally allows your VPN connection to be secure from attackers using quantum computers.

Threat Protection

This NordVPN feature blocks intrusive ads and malicious domains through DNS filtering. To enable it, you have to enable the Threat Protection feature. You can specify whether you would like this feature to block malicious ads always or only when the VPN is connected.

Settings (Profile)

Scrolling to the bottom, you will see the Profile section of the NordVPN AndroidTV application. From this section, you can see your subscription, log out of the application, read the NordVPN Terms of Service, send anonymous diagnostics to our customer support, and even check the application version.
