Introduction
This article explains how to manually set up a NordVPN connection on your Freebox device using the OpenVPN protocol, including how to obtain the NordVPN service credentials required for the setup. Follow the steps below to configure the VPN through the Freebox OS interface and verify that it is working.
Before you start
- A Freebox device with access to Freebox OS (version 3.4 or 4.5)
- An active NordVPN subscription
- Your NordVPN service credentials (covered in the steps below)
NOTE: Freebox devices cannot share a VPN connection with other devices. Even after you set up the VPN on the Freebox, devices connected to it will still use the standard internet connection, not the VPN. Setting up the VPN on the Freebox only protects the native "seedbox" and any downloads routed through it.
Here's what to do
Find your service credentials
- Log in to your Nord Account.
- Click "NordVPN" on the left side of the page.
- Scroll down to "Advanced settings" (Manual setup) and click "Set up NordVPN manually."
- Click the "Service credentials" tab. The first time, you may be asked to verify your email - click "Verify email" and follow the prompt.
- Copy your "Username" and "Password" using the copy buttons. These are different from your Nord Account login and are what you'll enter on the Freebox.support.nordvpn.com+2
Set up the VPN
- Navigate to http://mafreebox.freebox.fr/.
- Go to Freebox Settings and open "Client VPN."
- Select "Configuration VPN" and, on the right, select "Add new connection."
- Fill in the following information:
- Description: NordVPN
- Connection type: OpenVPN
- Username: your NordVPN service credential username
- Password: your NordVPN service credential password
- Server configuration file: select the server file you want to connect to.
- Check the VPN status on the same screen to confirm it is connected.
Test that the VPN is working
- Visit the IPMagnet website at http://ipmagnet.services.cbcdn.com/ and copy the magnet link.
- Go back to the Freebox download manager.
- Add the magnet link to the download settings and start the download.
- Return to the IPMagnet website - the detected IP should be the VPN's IP, confirming the connection is routing correctly.
Additional tips
- Service credentials are separate from your Nord Account login and are required for all manual/third-party setups.
- Use the recommended server utility to pick the optimal server configuration file for your location.
