How to connect to your NordVPN Dedicated server on Linux?

Introduction

In this article, you will learn how to connect to your NordVPN Dedicated Server on your desktop, laptop or any other device running a supported version of Linux.

Before you start

Before connecting, make sure your Dedicated Server has been purchased and activated in your Nord Account. Your server status must show Active - if it's still being set up, you'll see a notification to try again in a few minutes.

Connecting to your Dedicated Server via terminal:

  1. Open the Terminal.
  2. To connect to your Dedicated Server, run the command:
nordvpn connect Dedicated_Server

Connecting to your Dedicated Server via Tray app:

  1. By default, the NordVPN Tray app is visible at the top right of your screen when NordVPN is installed.
  2. Click on the NordVPN icon.
  3. Click on “All connections”.
  4. To connect to your Dedicated Server, click on “Dedicated Server” under “Specialty servers”.

Once connected

  1. The terminal displays a confirmation message with your Dedicated server number.
  2. The Tray displays “Secured”, followed by your Dedicated server's number, city, and country.
  3. The connection uses the NordLynx protocol exclusively. To set it, run:
nordvpn set technology nordlynx
  1. You can connect up to 10 devices to your Dedicated Server simultaneously.

Setting your Dedicated Server as preferred connection

You can set your Dedicated Server as the default for Auto-Connect. To do this, run the following command in the terminal:

nordvpn set autoconnect enabled dedicated_server

When set, the app will always connect to your Dedicated Server automatically when NordVPN starts.

Can't connect?

If the connection fails:

  • Make sure your server status is Active in your Nord Account dashboard.
  • If you see a "Too many sessions" error, disconnect one of your other devices and try again.
  • Restart the NordVPN app and try again. If the issue persists, contact our customer support team.
