What is the Tracker Blocker by NordVPN?

Introduction

The tracker blocker, a feature of Scam, phishing, and malware protection, prevents third-party trackers from following you online and collecting data about your habits. It actively blocks this monitoring as you browse, keeping your digital profile private from data brokers and advertisers.

How does the tracker blocker work?

  • Reduces targeted advertising – Stops trackers from building a profile about you, which significantly reduces the number of intrusive, targeted ads you see.
  • Helps prevent price discrimination – By hiding your browsing and shopping habits, it helps prevent online stores from using your data to show you inflated prices.
  • Stops digital profiling – Blocks the collection of your data—such as location, device used, and political views—that companies use to create detailed profiles on you.
  • Real-time privacy – Works constantly in the background to stop trackers as you browse, offering more immediate protection than a browser's private mode.

Requirements

Make sure that you have the NordVPN Plus or Ultimate subscription active and that the NordVPN application is installed on your Windows device.

Here's what to do

  1. Open the NordVPN app.
  2. Click the shield icon on the left side of the NordVPN application.
  3. Go to Advanced settingsAd and tracker blocker.
  4. Enable the Tracker blocker by clicking the toggle:

Managing trackers per domain

You can review and manage individual trackers detected on the websites you visit directly from the Scam, phishing, and malware protection activity view. Each detected tracker carries a status badge that reflects whether it is currently being blocked on that domain.

  • BLOCKED – Trackers from this domain are actively being stopped from following you.
  • UNBLOCKED – Trackers from this domain are allowed to load, for example, if you previously chose to unblock them.

To change the status for a specific domain:

  1. Open the protection activity view and locate the tracker you want to manage.
  2. Click the more (…) icon next to the tracker and select Manage threat.
  3. In the modal that opens, review the domain and, if needed, expand Show details to see the individual tracker URLs detected.
  4. Choose the action that matches what you want to do:
    • If the menu shows Trackers blocked, click Unblock trackers to allow trackers on the domain and all associated URLs. The status badge changes to UNBLOCKED.
    • If the menu shows Trackers unblocked, click Block trackers to block trackers on the domain and all associated URLs. The status badge changes to BLOCKED.
  5. Close the menu using the Close button or the x in the top-right corner.
