My internet is slow when using a VPN on Windows

Problem

Your internet connection is slow when connected to a VPN server on NordVPN’s Windows app.

Common symptoms

  • Your download and upload speed test results are lower than usual.
  • Websites and streaming videos take longer than usual to load.

Troubleshooting steps

NOTE: Check your connection speed on speedtest.net after each step.
NOTE: It is possible to experience an increase in ping when connecting to a country far away from your physical location.

  • If you used the “Secure my connection” button to connect to the VPN, try manually selecting and connecting to countries closest to your physical location instead.
  • Check if you are using the latest version of the NordVPN app:

    1. Click the cogwheel icon at the bottom left of the NordVPN app.
    2. If the app is outdated, you will see a banner showing that a new version is available. Click the “Update” button.

  • If you have an antivirus, ensure NordVPN is on the exclusions list.
  • Pause “Advanced Browsing Protection” in the Threat Protection Pro™ settings:

    1. Click the shield icon on the left side of the NordVPN application.
    2. In the “Advanced Browsing Protection” section, click “Pause.”

  • Change the VPN protocol:
NOTE: NordWhisper is incompatible with Dedicated IP, Obfuscated, and Onion Over VPN servers.

    1. Open the NordVPN app and click the gear icon in the lower-left corner to enter the “Settings” menu.
    2. Click “Connection.”
    3. Try all protocols.

  • Disable post-quantum encryption:

    1. Open the NordVPN app and click the gear icon in the lower-left corner to enter the “Settings” menu.
    2. Click “Connection.”
    3. Set “Post-Quantum encryption” to “Off.”

  • Reset your network settings:
NOTE: This also resets Wi-Fi networks, passwords, and VPN or APN settings you’ve used before.

    1. Open the NordVPN app.
    2. Click the question mark icon in the lower left corner to access the “Help” menu.
    3. Click Run Diagnostics.”
    4. Click “Reset network.”
    5. Wait for the commands to finish running and restart your computer.

Additional tips

  • Connect to an obfuscated server.
  • Check if the issue persists when connected to other networks.
  • Check if the issue occurs on other devices connected to the same network. If it does, try switching to a different network.
  • Check your internet connection without connecting to the VPN.
