Hulu doesn’t work

Problem

You can’t watch Hulu while connected to NordVPN.

Common symptoms

  • You get errors related to using a VPN.
  • The streaming content doesn’t load.

Troubleshooting steps

NOTE: The NordVPN service should never be used to bypass copyright regulations. NordVPN does not promote, condone, or endorse the use of the service for such purposes. For more details, please read the NordVPN Terms of Service.
NOTE: You can only stream on two devices at the same time.
NOTE: Local live channels will not work on mobile devices because they need location services.

  • If you want to stream Live TV on a laptop or desktop computer, emulate the location on your browser of the server you connected to:

    1. Open the developer tools by pressing F12.
    2. Click “Sensors.” If you do not see them, click the three dots on the top right, then “More Tools” and scroll until you see “Sensors.”
    3. Click on “No override” and select a predefined location. You can also create a custom location here.
    4. Refresh the Hulu website.

  • If you want to watch Hulu while connected to a server in Japan on a mobile device, change your device’s timezone to UTC+9:
NOTE: This step is only needed if you are connected to a Japanese server.

    1. Open the “Settings” app.
    2. Use the search feature and type “Date and time.”
    3. Turn off the “Automatic date and time” toggle and select “Japan.”
    4. Relaunch Hulu.

  • Perform a NordVPN DNS leak test. To ensure you’re properly connected to NordVPN, look for the “Connected to NordVPN” message. If you do not see it, there might be an issue with your connection, and you should try restarting your device and connecting to NordVPN again.
  • Close the browser or Hulu app and connect to a different server in the same country.
NOTE: On iOS devices, the streaming application needs to be reinstalled instead of clearing the cache.
NOTE: On Android devices, follow these steps to clear the cache:

    1. Open the “Settings” application.
    2. Use the search button and type “Apps.”
    3. Look for the Hulu app and tap on it.
    4. Tap “Force Stop” at the bottom right. When you get the warning dialog, tap “OK.”
    5. Scroll down to “Usage” and tap on “Storage.”
    6. Tap “Clear cache.”

  • Turn off location services on your device.
  • Clear the browser’s cache or the streaming application’s cache.
  • Turn off third-party web protection services that could interfere with your connection.
  • Turn off DNS over HTTPS or Secure DNS.
  • Pause NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro™:

    1. Click the shield icon on the left side of the NordVPN app.
    2. Click “Overview” and pause every subfeature one by one to check which one could be causing the issue.
NOTE: Threat Protection Pro™ is not available on mobile, Linux, or browser extensions. On these platforms, turn off the Threat Protection feature instead:

      • On iOS and Android devices, tap the shield icon at the bottom of the NordVPN app and then tap the toggle next to “Use Threat Protection” to disable it.
      • On Linux devices and browser extensions, go to Settings, select “Security and privacy,” and toggle off Threat Protection.

Additional tips
