Mac OS X setup

These are the various connection methods you can use on a Mac OS X device.

Please choose a connection method below:

NordVPN application - Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or newer - recommended
  • 2. Navigate to your Downloads folder and double-click the NordVPN.dmg file you have downloaded.

  • 3. A new window will pop-up asking to drag NordVPN icon inside the Applications folder in order to install NordVPN application. Select and drag NordVPN icon to the Applications folder by pressing your mouse button down and release it once the icon is inside the folder.
  • 4. Open your Applications directory where you will find NordVPN icon. Double click it and a new dialogue box will appear : “NordVPN is an application downloaded from the internet. Are you sure you want to open it?”. Click on Open.
  • 5. Click on the MENU button at the top left of the application window to open the User Menu.
  • 6. Click Log in , enter your NordVPN account credentials, and click Log In again.


User menu

  • 7. Whenever you will log in, the User menu will appear. In the first three sections you can see your username, IP address with indicator icon, expiration date and application settings.
  • 8. To connect to the VPN you can simply click on a country pin - It will connect you to the fastest server in that country. Your IP address will change as well and the indicator icon should say “Real IP Hidden”.

User menu options

  • 9.In the User menu you can find multiple settings and functions. You can scroll down to find more settings:

    Connect on Start – You can set up a server that application will always connect you to whenever the application is started.

    Kill Switch - You can add applications that you would like to be terminated in an event where VPN connection is lost.

    Advanced Settings - More in-depth settings of the application.

    Email Support - Send an e-mail to our support staff.

    Knowledge Base - Access our Help Center, filled with self-help information, common questions and answers, as well as set-up guides.

    Export VPN Log - Export the local VPN connection log, used for troubleshooting.

    Favourite Servers - Open your favourite server list.

    Server List - Open the full server list.

    Sign Out - Sign out of the currently-signed-in NordVPN account.

Advanced Settings

  • 10.In the Advanced settings menu you can find multiple advanced options. You can scroll down to find more settings:

    Start on Boot - enable this to make the NordVPN application start when you start your Mac.

    Enable Notifications - You can enable the connection/disconnection notifications here, and customize their behaviour.

    Protocol - This setting allows you to change the connection protocol used in the OpenVPN version of our application. The IKEv2 version of the application does not have this option.

    Custom DNS - You can change the DNS addresses used when connected here, if you prefer to use your own DNS servers.

Server list

  • 11. Clicking the Server List option in the User menu will open the full NordVPN server list. You can scroll down the list or use the search bar for a particular server. The list shows the server’s Load, Ping and Distance. You can add the server to Favorites by clicking Heart icon. To connect to the server click on the server itself.

Kill Switch

  • 12. In the Kill Switch option you can add applications which you wish to be terminated if the VPN connection suddenly disconnects. In this example we have added Safari to the Kill Switch list.




Connect on Start

  • 13. You can mark a server to connect to when the application starts. Click on Select next to the Connect on Start option, and select a server.



    Afterwards, enable the Connect on Start option, and the application will connect to the chosen server when it starts.

Tunnelblick application - OpenVPN

These are the instructions you can use to connect with the Tunnelblick application.

  • 1. Download Tunnelblick. Tunnelblick provides free, user-friendly control of OpenVPN client connections for Mac OS.
  • 2. Download the Mac OS configuration files package.
  • 3. To begin installation of OpenVPN for Mac OS, navigate to your Downloads folder and double click the Tunnelblick disc image (DMG) file you just downloaded.
  • 4. Double-click on the Tunnelblick icon in the Tunnelblick disk image Finder window.
  • 5. A new dialogue box appears: Tunnelblick is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? Click Open.
  • 6. An installation dialogue appears: Install Tunnelblick? Click Install.
  • 7. A dialogue box appears: Installation succeeded. Tunnelblick was successfully installed. Do you wish to launch Tunnelblick now? (An administrator username and password will be required so Tunnelblick can be secured.) Click Launch.
  • 8. You may see a dialogue box: Tunnelblick needs to repair ownership/permissions of the program to secure it. Type your password to allow Tunnelblick to make changes. If so, enter your computer’s admininstrator username and password and click OK. Then exit Tunnelblick totally.
  • 9. Unzip the MAC OS configuration package you have downloaded. If you do not have any file archiving software on your machine you can use a software called "Keka" to extract it.
  • 10. VERY IMPORTANT: Please make sure the Tunnelblick is not running in the background - the configurations would fail to be imported if Tunnelblick is running.
  • 11. Select all Mac OS configuration files and double-click on one (An administrator username and password will be required). By doing this, you will add the servers to the Tunnelblick server list.
  • 12. Find the Tunnelblick icon in your menu bar (top right). Click on the Tunnelblick icon to bring down the dropdown menu and you will see the list of our servers.
  • 13. Select the server and click connect.
  • 14. Enter you VPN credentials, mark the box Save in Keychain and click Ok.
  • 15. You are connected to VPN. To disconnect click on the Tunnelblick icon in your menu bar and select Disconnect from the drop down menu.

Viscosity
  • 1. Download Viscosity (Mac OS 10.7 or later is required). Viscosity is an OpenVPN client with intuitive interface offering complete configuration of OpenVPN connections on Mac OS.
  • 2. Download the Mac OS configuration files package.
  • 3. To begin installation of OpenVPN for Mac OS, navigate to your Downloads folder and double click the Viscosity disc image (DMG) file you just downloaded.
  • 4. New window will pop up asking to drag the Viscosity icon inside the Applications folder in order to install Viscosity. Select and drag Viscosity icon to the Applications folder by holding your left mouse button down, release it once the icon is inside the folder.
  • 5. Once the Viscosity icon is inside the Applications folder double click it. A new dialogue box appears: "Viscosity" is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? Click Open.
  • 6. An installation dialogue appears: Viscosity Helper Tool Installation. Click Install.
  • 7. A warning appears: Viscosity is trying to install a new helper tool. Type your password to allow this and click on “Install Helper”.
  • 8. After quick installation Viscosity icon appears on your menu bar near the top right corner of the screen and a "Welcome to Viscosity" dialogue which you may close by clicking Close.
  • 9. Click the Viscosity icon located on your menu bar near the top right corner of the screen and choose Preferences...
  • 10. In the newly opened window click the plus sign at the bottom right corner and choose Import Connection > From File.. Another window appears in which you should choose config folder which was downloaded on step 2 and click Open.
  • 11. Success dialogue should appear saying that connection/s were imported successfully and you should already see connections in the background. Click OK and close the window.
  • 12. Click the Viscosity icon located on your menu bar near the top right corner of the screen, you should see a list of servers in a dropdown menu. Choose a server to connect to click on it once.
  • 13. A new box appears asking for credentials. Enter your NordVPN credentials (both username and password are case sensitive), check the box Remember details in my Keychain and proceed by clicking OK.
  • 14. Shortly after connecting success message should appear near the top right corner of the screen. You are connected to VPN. To disconnect, click on the Viscosity icon and click again on the same server and another disconnection message should appear.

IKEv2 manual setup - OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or newer
  • 1. First, download the NordVPN IKEv2 certificate to your Mac. The easiest way would be to open this link on the Mac itself: https://downloads.nordvpn.com/certificates/root.der
    Once downloaded, open the certificate file from the Downloads folder.
  • 2. The Add Certificates window will appear. Click Add to add it to the login keychain.
  • 3. Right-click the NordVPN Root CA certificate in the login keychain, and select Get Info.
  • 4. Next to "When using this certificate", select Always Trust. You will have to enter your Mac password to make these changes. Then close the keychain.
  • 5. Click on the Apple on the upper hand corner of the screen. Then click on System Preferences.
  • 6. In System Preferences click on the Network icon.
  • 7. When the network screen pops up, click on the + icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen (you must have administrator privileges).
  • 8. The new network screen will pop up. Under the Interface drop down list select VPN. Under the VPN Type drop down list select IKEv2. In the Service Name field you can type anything you want, we recommend that you call the service NordVPN (IKEv2) and Click Create.
  • 9. The settings for the new VPN connection will now be displayed. In the Server Address and Remote ID fields type in the hostname of a NordVPN server. To find one, simply go to our server list. All available server addresses are listed there.
  • 10. Click on the Authentication Settings… button.
    Select Username as the Authentication method, then type in your NordVPN Username and Password. Click OK, then click Apply button.
  • 11. Check "Show VPN status in menu bar" (optional), click Connect, and then click Apply.
  • 12. You will now be connected. You can also check the box Show VPN status in menu bar then you’ll be able to connect to your VPN from status bar.

L2TP/IPsec manual setup
Please Note: Although technically you can use the L2TP / PPTP protocols, they have serious security flaws. Whenever possible, we recommend choosing OpenVPN or IKEv2/IPSec instead.
    • 1. Click on the Apple on the upper hand corner of the screen. Then click on System Preferences.

    • 2. In System Preferences click on the Network icon.

      3. When the network screen pops up, click on the + icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen (you must have administrator privileges).
    • 4. The new network screen will pop up. Under the Interface drop down list select VPN. Under the VPN Type drop down list select L2TP over IPsec. In the Service Name field you can type anything you want, we recommend that you call the service NordVPN (L2TP) and Click Create.
    • 5. The settings for the new VPN connection will now be displayed. In the Server Address field type the name or the IP address of a NordVPN server. Login to your profile on the website and go to our server list. All available server addresses are listed there.
      In the Account Name field type your NordVPN username.
    • 6. Click on the Authentication Settings… button.
      Enter your VPN Password in the Password field.
      Under Machine Authentication, click the radio button for Shared Secret. Enter nordvpn in the Shared Secret text field and click OK, then click Apply button.
    • 7. Click on the Advanced button. Check the Send all traffic over VPN connection check box. Click Ok and click Apply.
    • 8. You should now be able to connect to the VPN. You can check the box Show VPN status in menu bar then you’ll be able to connect to your VPN from status bar.

PPTP manual setup
Please Note: Although technically you can use the L2TP / PPTP protocols, they have serious security flaws. Whenever possible, we recommend choosing OpenVPN or IKEv2/IPSec instead.
    • 1. Click on the Apple on the upper hand corner of the screen. Then click on System Preferences.
    • 2. In System Preferences click on the Network icon.
    • 3. When the network screen pops up, click on the + icon in the lower left hand corner of the screen (you must have administrator privileges).
    • 4. The new network screen will pop up. Under the Interface drop down list select VPN. Under the VPN Type drop down list select PPTP. In the Service Name field you can type anything you want, we recommend that you call the service NordVPN (PPTP) and Click Create.
    • 5. The settings for the new VPN connection will now be displayed. In the Server Address field type the name or the IP address of a NordVPN server. Login to your profile on the website and go to our server list. All available server addresses are listed there.
      In the Account Name field type your NordVPN username.
      In the Encryption field select Maximum encryption.
    • 6. Click on the Authentication Settings… button.
      Enter your VPN Password in the Password field.
    • 7. Click on the Advanced button. Check the Send all traffic over VPN connection check box. Click Ok and click Apply.
    • 8. You should now be able to connect to the VPN. You can check the box Show VPN status in menu bar then you’ll be able to connect to your VPN from status bar.
