Tips to improve connection speed on Windows while connected to NordVPN

If you are experiencing slow connection speed while connected to NordVPN on Windows, try these steps:

  1. Restart your device.
  2. Restart your router/modem. If you have set up your router with VPN and the speed is insufficient, try using VPN solely on your computer/phone.
  3. If you are using Wi-Fi, switch to a wired connection.
  4. Switch the VPN server to one closer to you geographically.
  5. Switch to a server with a lower server-load percentage. If the server load is higher than 70%, we recommend using a different server.

  7. Open Advanced Settings and switch from the default UDP protocol to TCP.

Also, internet speed can be directly influenced by both your hardware and firmware state, so we would recommend to:

  1. Make sure that you have the latest available device drivers on your computer; Ethernet-adapter and motherboard drivers, BIOS updates, latest router firmware, etc.
  2. Temporarily disable your firewall to see whether it will have an impact on your overall internet speeds. If it does, please check your firewall settings and remove unnecessary rules or consider using a different firewall software overall.
  3. Close any applications that can transfer data and are running in the background, e.g. downloading/filesharing software.
  4. Old routers or even a new router that is provided by your internet services provider are often using an outdated firmware or technically poorly manufactured. This can directly impact your internet speed, so we would recommend investing in a better router.
