Downloading and installing

First of all, you need to download and install the NordVPN application on your Android device.

  1. Tap on the Play Store.

  2. Enter NordVPN in the search bar and select the NordVPN app. Tap Install.

Using and setting up the app

  1. When the application is installed, tap to open it.

  2. You will see the main menu of the application. Tap Sign up.

  3. Then enter your desired credentials and select Create Account if you want to create one, or tap on I already have an account and log in with your NordVPN credentials.

  4. If you are logging in for the first time, you will get a notification about our CyberSec feature. Turn on the feature by clicking on the Turn CyberSec On button.

You can read more about the CyberSec feature here.

Please note that, due to Google’s policies, the CyberSec feature will no longer block ads on the NordVPN app downloaded from the Google Play Store. But let’s look at the bright side: it will keep protecting you from malicious websites and other cyber threats. And if you’d rather see less of those intrusive ads, the app version with the ad blocker is still available on our website.

  5. You can now connect to a server with the Quick connect option.

Using a complex formula that includes various server parameters, Quick connect chooses the best server for you at that moment.

  6. You may be greeted with a few warning messages. They are default Android warning messages for VPN connections, and you can safely press OK on them. They may also require you to mark a checkbox in the window.

Choosing between different servers

  1. You can tap any of the country pins and quickly connect to a server from that country by tapping the Quick Connect button or swiping up the country card and selecting a specific server to connect to.

  2. Alternatively, you can open a list of the available countries and specialty servers by swiping up from the bottom of the app. To connect, simply tap on the country name.

  3. Under the Specialty servers menu, you can find P2P, Obfuscated, Dedicated IP, Double VPN and Onion over VPN server categories. A full list of categories is available after swiping up the Specialty servers card.

  4. You can also tap on the three dots next to a country and get a more detailed cities selection.

Managing favorite servers

  1. While connected to a server, you can add it to your favorite servers. Tap on the back button, swipe up and select My Favorites.

  2. You will see a button to add the current server to favorites.

General settings

  1. By clicking the back arrow, you will return back to the map view. In the top left corner of the application, you can tap on the cog icon and access your Account information and Settings.

  2. Here you can find information about your subscription and other settings of the application, like CyberSec, split tunnelingprotocol switch, Auto-Connect or Custom DNS. The X at the top left corner will return you to the regular menu of the application.

CyberSec - Enable this setting to use our CyberSec feature while connected to the VPN. It will protect you from intrusive ads, malware sites, phishing links, and other threats.

Split tunneling - Disable VPN for selected apps. Apps added to this list will not use a VPN connection.

Auto-connect - Select the network type where the app will automatically connect. You can find more detailed instructions in a section below.

Use TCP - Tap on a switch to enable TCP protocol. By default, the app is using the UDP protocol. UDP is mainly used for online streaming and downloading. TCP is more reliable but a little slower than UDP and usually used for web browsing.

Custom DNS - Set DNS servers of your choice for the NordVPN app to use.

Auto-connect

  1. In the Set auto-connect section, you can select the network type where the app will automatically connect. You can choose a cellular network, Wi-Fi or Always.

  2. In the Settings section, you can select where the app will automatically connect. You can choose from Recommended server, Recent Connections, Specialty servers or a specific country.

  3. In the Trusted networks section, you can exclude a specific Wi-Fi network where the app will not connect automatically. Example: you can exclude your home Wi-Fi network.

Note: Auto-connect exceptions on Wi-Fi will not work on Android 10 due to the security changes in the Android OS

(Optional) Sideload the NordVPN app

If you're unable to download NordVPN application from the Play Store, you can instead download an .apk file clicking on this link.

To install it, you will also need to change your device's security settings. Go to Settings -> Security & Privacy -> More Settings -> Install apps from external sources. Select the browser that you used to download NordVPN .apk. Switch on the option Allow app installs.

On Android version 7.0 and below, you can find this option in Settings -> Security -> Unknown sources.
